Why did I become a librarian? The main reason was as a child I struggled to get hold of the books by my favourite author (Enid Blyton) and these were 'bad' for me and banned. So I kinda decided to be a librarian with lots of EB's books on the shelves. And i've done that alongside buying multiple copies of Junk, Doing It etc. If it's banned i'll read it and buy it for my students! Where am I now? I tried at uni where possible to specialise in school librarianship -my ideal course of duel qualification as librarian/teacher being removed the year I went. I have worked in school libraries ever since: CTC, 11-16 comp, turned 11-16, turned community, merged into academy. What am I doing next? Career progression is non-existent in schools, sure my schools have, in the main, got bigger, along with responsibilities ( writing my own job description), the thing I do like doing now is sharing my experiences, helping new school librarians etc. I'd also like to try for fellowship - not that it would have any impact on my job/salary -just for me. I remember as a student at uni I really wanted a work placement at a school. There were none. I have continually offered this to current students with no joy. But we really need good quality librarians in schools as this is where they form their opinions and habits for reading, IL, and their experiences of libraries and librarians..... Just a pet hobby horse of mine.....
